Weekend buyer briefing: Copilot+ PC specs that matter now
Enzo Reno ·
Shoppers weighing Windows AI laptops this weekend face a mature Copilot+ PC lineup that began shipping in June 2024 across the United States and Europe. Microsoft set a 40 trillion operations per second NPU floor, 16 GB of memory, and NVMe solid state storage for the Copilot+ badge, which now spans models from Asus, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Microsoft’s Surface line. The spec matters because it governs on device AI features and battery life, not just raw CPU speed.
The chip split is the key decision. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite advertises a 45 TOPS NPU, AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series lists up to 50 TOPS, and Intel says its Lunar Lake NPU delivers 48 TOPS, according to vendor briefings at Computex 2024. All meet Microsoft’s baseline for on device features such as image generation and Live Captions, as outlined in Microsoft’s May 2024 Windows blog.
What to check before buying
Confirm the Copilot+ label and the NPU spec, then memory and storage. Microsoft requires at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD, and Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC started at 999 dollars when orders opened on May 20 2024 and shipments began June 18, Microsoft said. Battery life varies by chassis and screen, but early reviews found Snapdragon X systems delivered strong efficiency compared with prior x86 laptops, according to testing by PCWorld and AnandTech in mid 2024.
Ports and connectivity still differ widely. Many Copilot+ ultrabooks limit expandability to USB-C, while creator focused systems from Asus and Lenovo keep HDMI and SD slots. OLED screens ship on premium tiers, which improves contrast for media but can reduce runtime compared with IPS at the same battery capacity, reviewers have noted.
App support and privacy notes
Daily apps have improved on Windows on ARM. Google released a native ARM64 build of Chrome for Windows in March 2024, joining Microsoft 365 and Teams, which already run natively, and Adobe continues to rely on cloud processing for many generative features, according to company documentation. For niche or legacy software, check for ARM64 support or recent updates, since emulation adds overhead.
Microsoft’s Recall feature shifted after criticism from security researchers in June 2024. The company made Recall opt in, stored its timeline index locally in an encrypted database, and required Windows Hello to decrypt it, Microsoft’s Pavan Davuluri and David Weston wrote on June 13 2024, with broader testing moved to the Windows Insider Program.
For the broader tech landscape, this weekend’s purchase calculus shows the PC market pivoting from CPU checklists to dedicated NPU capability and energy efficiency, which now influence software roadmaps at Microsoft, Google, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm and will shape how consumers judge value through 2026.
