VCs start week shifting checks from AI models to power and cooling as grid constraints harden
Sofia Reyes ·
Venture firms opened the week reallocating early-stage dollars from model and application bets to the AI power stack, citing tightening grid capacity and rising compute costs. In the U.S. and Europe, partners said Monday they are prioritizing startups in energy procurement, advanced cooling, and grid orchestration that can unlock near term capacity for hyperscalers and AI infrastructure providers.
The timing tracks expected hyperscaler earnings and capex updates this week, which investors view as validation for power first roadmaps. It also follows utility data that shows interconnection queues at record highs and multi year delays for new large load connections in key markets like Texas and Northern Virginia.
Power is the new bottleneck
Investors that backed model companies in 2023 now ask founders for a power acquisition plan alongside a product roadmap. Term sheets increasingly include milestones tied to secured megawatts, interconnection progress, or offtake agreements with colocation providers, not just customer logos.
Specialist deeptech and climate funds that already play in energy, including those active in nuclear, geothermal, and thermal management, report heavier early week pipeline around liquid cooling, waste heat reuse, and grid aware workload scheduling. Corporate venture arms attached to chipmakers and data center operators are co investing, which signals an emphasis on channel access and deployment speed over brand new science.
What investors are underwriting
Gross margin and retention still govern software deals, but for AI infrastructure adjacencies investors now diligence siting, permitting, and interconnect risk with the same rigor as unit economics. Early customers include cloud providers, boutique AI clouds, and enterprise data centers that need to add capacity before year end, which helps shorten sales cycles compared with traditional utility facing climate tech.
Valuations reflect a flight to the near shovel ready. Partners describe more priced seed and Series A rounds with tranched capital and board oversight, replacing the uncapped notes that were common during the 2021 cycle. Founders who can pair technical depth with project finance fluency get meetings first on Mondays as firms try to lock scarce capacity.
The shift pulls venture closer to infrastructure investing and tilts the ecosystem back toward hardware adjacent businesses. As AI becomes bounded by electrons rather than models, advantage accrues to startups that treat power and thermal constraints as core product features, not externalities, and to funds that can underwrite both technology risk and execution at the edge of the grid.
