GitHub makes Copilot Workspace generally available, bundles it with Copilot Enterprise at 39 dollars per user

GitHub said Tuesday it is making Copilot Workspace generally available worldwide and will include it for customers on Copilot Enterprise at 39 dollars per user per month. The company framed Workspace as a way for teams to go from natural‑language plans to pull requests inside GitHub, a step that targets production use of AI for day‑to‑day engineering work.

GitHub positions the release as an enterprise feature, adding approval gates, repository scoping, and audit logs for AI‑generated plans and diffs. The move arrives as large companies shift from code completion pilots to end‑to‑end automation under compliance guardrails, a priority accelerated by internal cost targets and upcoming EU AI Act transparency obligations.

Workspace generates task plans from issues, READMEs, and documentation, proposes multi‑file changes, and opens pull requests with test suggestions, according to GitHub’s product materials. It integrates with GitHub Actions for CI and policy checks, so proposed changes cannot merge without human review or passing tests.

The company continues to run Copilot on models supplied through Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, a setup Microsoft has said does not train foundation models on customer code or prompts for enterprise tiers. GitHub has cited a 2022 controlled study showing developers completed a task 55 percent faster with Copilot assistance, a signal the firm uses to argue that moving AI into planning and PR creation can compress lead time beyond simple code suggestions.

Pricing for Copilot Business remains 19 dollars per user per month, and GitHub said Workspace access is included at the Enterprise tier. Competing tools remain active in the space, including Amazon CodeWhisperer Professional at 19 dollars per user per month from Amazon Web Services, JetBrains AI Assistant at 8.33 dollars per user per month, and Atlassian Intelligence features that tie generative prompts to Jira and Confluence.

GitHub, a Microsoft subsidiary that reported more than 100 million developers on its platform in 2023, is using Workspace to deepen integration with its own stack, including Codespaces and Advanced Security. For enterprises, the release signals that AI assistants are shifting from suggestion widgets to governed agents that can plan changes and open pull requests, which could influence where companies place their developer workflow and cloud budgets over the next budget cycle.
