Friday Briefing: AI laptops hit stores with big battery gains, but app checks matter before weekend buys

Shoppers in the United States will find a broader slate of so called AI PCs on shelves this weekend, including Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC and models from Asus, Lenovo, HP, and Dell that began shipping in mid 2024. These systems pair Windows on Arm or next gen x86 chips with NPUs rated at 40 TOPS or higher, which Microsoft set as the bar for its Copilot+ features. Prices for entry configurations start around 999 dollars for Microsoft’s 13.8 inch Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X Plus.
The timing matters as back to school promotions and mid July sales windows increase pressure to buy now. IDC has said AI PCs will make up a majority of shipments later this decade, and noted in its 2024 outlook that Copilot+ launches mark a platform transition that will influence refresh decisions for several years.
What reviewers found Independent tests highlight battery life as the clear advantage on first wave Arm based machines. The Verge and PCWorld reported full workdays away from outlets on Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite laptops, with lighter use pushing well past 12 hours, while Microsoft rates the Surface Laptop at up to 20 hours of local video playback and 15 hours of web browsing. Thermals and fan noise also improved versus many recent Intel U series systems in like for like chassis.
Compatibility remains the check box to clear. Google released a native Arm version of Chrome for Windows in early 2024, and Adobe shipped native Photoshop and Lightroom with Premiere Pro in active development, but some plugins and pro tools still rely on x86 emulation. Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer handled many mainstream apps in reviewer trials, yet anti cheat dependent Windows games and certain VPN or security drivers continue to require native updates from vendors.
Security and features Microsoft delayed the Recall timeline capture feature ahead of Copilot+ availability after researchers raised privacy concerns. The company said in June 2024 that Recall would ship as an opt in capability with additional protections, including Windows Hello enrollment and encryption, and would not be enabled by default.
Intel and AMD alternatives enter the mix through 2025 with Lunar Lake and Strix Point class chips that vendors claim deliver 40 to 50 plus TOPS NPUs and better efficiency. That broadens choices for buyers who rely on older peripherals or niche Windows software that remains x86 specific.
For the broader tech landscape, the shift to on device inference changes laptop value around battery life, sustained performance, and private AI workloads, not just raw CPU clocks. That realignment favors component makers and developers that can prove tangible gains from NPUs in everyday apps, and it gives consumers a reason to prioritize platform roadmaps over short term discounts.
